enjoying the afternoon

Img_5418 Img_5428 Img_5457 Photo_614 this has been a great weekend so far.  some of the folks at RCC through a bonfire party on Saturday night and we got a couple of surprise gifts for pastor appreciation night.  highlights for me were a collection of this american life podcasts, and a collection of glen phillips bootlegs.

had a great morning at church today and then spent the afternoon exploring the trails near our house with my oldest daughter hope.  now i'm watching the skins and pats play and spending some time with my littlest girl maddie.

evangelistic worship

Timothy_kellerjust read a great article by tim keller on evangelistic worship.  this is and issue that is consistently a dance for the church, and particularly for us as worship leaders.  what is the role of worship in evangelism.

i have long held the conviction that worship is necessary for evangelism.  it fuels it.  a church that does not worship will fail at the evangelistic mission.  now that can look lots of ways, and it requires us to really evaluate what we are doing corporately and privately (remember Paul's comments in 1 Corinthians)...but that said worship fuels mission

check out the article, i though keller had some really great thoughts that will challenge you no matter what camp you fall in on this issue.

audacious prayers

I've been chewing on this passage this weekend:

O LORD, what is man that you regard him,
   or the son of man that you think of him?
Man is like a breath;
   his days are like a passing shadow.
Bow your heavens, O LORD, and come down!
   Touch the mountains so that they smoke!
Flash forth the lightning and scatter them;
   send out your arrows and rout them!

        - Psalm 144:3-6

There is such a dichotomy present here.  The psalmist is utterly aware of his smallness in the light of YHWH, but still he has great courage to pray an audacious prayer "bow your heavens and come down!"  wow.  What does it look like for me to pray like that?

worship central this month

Screenshot_1the worship central podcast for this month features an interview with Al Gordon about how to lead worship for an  .  Al is one of the worship leaders with Tim Hughes at Holy Trinity Brompton, where Alpha got its start.  Alpha is an evangelistic coarse for people not plugged into church that has had huge success around the world.  We don't currently do Alpha at our church, but our Sunday morning services are definitely geared towards people who are exploring who God is and may not have been to church much in the past.

i really appreciated the discussion of the kinds of songs to play and the potential impact of certain types of lyrics. go check it out.

field trip...

Logo_main for our rehearsal time this past wednesday i took the band downtown to Arlington to visit a club down there called iota.  they have open mic nights on wednesdays so i thought it may be fun, and a good opportunity to meet some more musicians in the area.  unfortunately we were thwarted in sitting in on the open mic as the club section of the venue is 21 and up and we have a young apprentice on bass who couldn't get in.

none the less we had a great time as a team, chatting and listening to the artists through the wall. :-)  i think its so easy, especially for worship teams to become insulated from everything apart from our little worlds.  i'm always trying to think of ways to stretch us a bit, and cast some vision to our team to have God's heart for the people around them.
