Matt -- here's a quote to add to this conversation:

• Tim Chester & Steve Timmis (Total Church) -- “Emil Brunner famously said: ‘The church exists by mission as a fire exists by burning.’ It is sometimes said that worship, rather than mission, is the central purpose of the church. But this is a false dichotomy. It is true that the church has been brought into being to give worship to God. It exists to be the bride of Christ. But Jesus does not take us up to join the heavenly choir at our conversion. Jesus left his church on earth, he tells us , to be his witnesses to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). Indeed within history it is through mission that we declare God’s praises (1 Peter 2:9). We who have drunk from the wells of salvation sing with joy. But we sing God’s praises to the nations. We make God’s salvation ‘known to all the world’ (Isaiah 12). Within history, worship is mission, and mission is worship. Within history, the church glorifies God by making him known to the world. Within history, mission must be central to every local church.”
