i have really enjoyed craig groeschel's posts on spiritual esteem this week. go read them if you haven't. this is something that i think as creative people we have to grasp. creative endeavors are often very subjective, and we all yearn to feel like what we create is good. i know i often struggle with self esteem, and truly understanding where the source of my worth and value come from. its has been an interesting journey for me that God has been dealing with over many, many years...and something that i consistently discover needs more refining.
as a worship leader this can be a dangerous trap. when our spiritual esteem is low, we slip into a mentality of craving adoration and "respect" from the people we lead. this can lead to:
- anger at your team for not "nailing songs" and making you look bad
- anger at the congregation for not "responding
Godyou - choosing songs based on emotional manipulation rather than the prompting and leading of the Holy Spirit
- a self centered spirit that will clog your devotional life
- performance rather than leading people in worship
is the esteem of God really enough for you?
