Tricia,

We inexpensively purchased a wonderful program called Bumpercar (Mac downloadable sample here: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/23187 or Amazon purchase here: http://www.amazon.com/BumperCar-Browser-2-0-Internet-Filtering/dp/B0007WV3DO ) that is an Internet portal for kids--there are White List sites preset, and all sorts of parental filters on it. Logan can only go to approved sites--if he tries to link to a page we haven't OK'd then a pop-up asks him to get a parent's OK (which requires one of us to input a password and add the site to the White List). It is graphically fun, and is loaded with some good stuff out of the box. Parents can limit how much time a child is allowed online in a day, and can set the program to preschool mode or older kids. YOu can choose some of your favorite sites and just add them to the filters so it's easy for your kids to find the sites you think are OK for them to see. Check it out! ;-D
