I found your post via Google while searching for this same problem. I wanted to add my experience in case someone else had a similar problem. In my case, I was driving a 2008 Chrysler Town & Country. I accelerated while trying to pass another car (at about 50 mph also), and the accelerator stuck. As explained in the post, I also put the car in neutral and pulled over.

We just returned from the Chrysler dealership. According to them, sticking accelerators have not been an issue. They also said there is "no physical connection between the accelerator pedal and the engine...it's all done by computer". They formatted/rebooted the car's computer as a precaution.
