For the Nerds Like Me
If this is a something that you want to know more about, whether you are actually considering it for yourself or not, here are some great resources. The best thing to do as you research (about home birth or anything else) is to keep an open mind. Read a variety of resources and don’t let one person’s strong opinion dictate your own!
Books
Creating Your Birth Plan—Marsden
Wagner, M.D., M.S.
I would recommend this book
for EVERY pregnant woman. Keeping a neutral tone, this book gives
a wealth of information on different aspects of birth, encouraging you
to make your own choices every step of the way.
Gentle Birth Choices—Barbara
Harper, R.N.
This book encourages women
to reclaim the joy and wonder that are part of birth, wherever you give
birth, but Harper favors birth at home or in a birthing center.
It deals a lot with changing the attitudes toward birth, and comes with
a DVD showing six different types of births.
The Thinking Woman’s Guide
to a Better Birth—Henci Goer
Goer takes a very strong anti-hospital
position in this book, but uses an enormous amount of medical research
and findings, which can be very helpful. I wouldn’t read
this book first if you’re interested in home birth, but it is very
thorough in its research and has a lot of great information.
Other neat books:
The Birth Book by William and Martha Sears, Homebirth by
Sheila Kitzinger, Birthing from Within by Pam England.
