If you've never had the comfort and satisfaction of a warm bowl of homemade applesauce, then you aretruly missing out! It's easy, delicious, kid-friendly, great as a side dish or a yummy treat all on it's own. If you understand the basics, you'll be able to create your own winning version in no time!
Here's what to do:
- use a deep saucepan with a thick rather than thin bottom (you can also use a crockpot!)
- peel, core, and dice your apples (you'll need a decent amount because they cook down - different apples will cook and taste differently, you can refer to my earlier Apples part 1 post)
- add some water (not too much - try 1/2 to 3/4 C )
- cover and bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer uncovered until apples are soft and most of the water has evaporated. If the apples get dry or too sticky before they are tender, just add a little more water as needed.
- for a spectacular and mellow treat, you can add a vanilla bean to the pot while it's simmering
- add your optional flavorings to taste...brown sugar (although sugar isn't necessary), cinnamon, nutmeg, a little orange zest, ginger...whatever you like
- mash to your desired consistency ( I like it a little chunky, a hand-held potato masher works great )
- serve warm, cooled, with raisins, pecans, or plain, or topped with a little whipped cream or cinnamon...or bring a steamy containerful to your neighbor.
