My kids always brought some kind of little gift for their new sibling also. We never went for the 'gift so you don't feel left out thing' either, because the really did feel like the new baby WAS our family's gift. As my daughter got older (she was 8 when her youngest brother was born) she actually had crocheted a scarf for him all by herself, and was so excited to give it to him at the hospital. I think your approach is great, and helps to build family unity vs. a 'what-about-me' mentality.
