Last week we did an apple-themed family night. It was very simple, but so much fun! - inspired by my girls' ongoing requests to bob for apples.
We started with a game - I laid out 8 different kinds of apples and we talked about their color and shape. Then I gave the girls paper apples with the names of the different kinds of apples displayed written on them and challenged them to see if they could match them up correctly. Then we cut them all up and taste-tested/compared them. Our choices were: Gala, Granny smith, Golden delicious, Red delicious, McIntosh, Honey Crisp, Jazz, and Pink Lady.
Next we went to the craft area of our basement for an art project: printing with paint and apples cut across the middle to reveal the star shape made by the seeds!
Dinner was a nice salad of lots of veggies, roasted chicken - and you guessed it! Apples! I further chopped some of our taste-testing varieties and tossed them on our salads, along with some broken apple chips for crunch and an apple-vinigrette dressing.
After dinner we went out back to bob for apples - I used a smaller, plastic bin so that it would be easier for the short kids to lean over and clear so we could see their faces in the water!
We dried off and went in to watch a slide-show of the photos we had already taken that night during dessert - apples dipped in caramel! We used the rest of the already cut-up apples from taste-testing.
Then the girls got ready for bed and we topped off our evening with a couple of apple-themed good-night storybooks.
